REFLECTION
In Closing
I was able to glean quite a bit of practical knowledge from my time spent in my internship. I was able to watch court proceedings for first-hand experience with the way a courtroom is handled. Luckily this was the first time. Understanding how documents are filed with the court from both the police side and the public side will benefit me greatly down the line. Working with both civil cases and criminal misdemeanors also helped me to decide what type of law interested me the most.

PROJECT DETAILS
Typical Work Week
I work 20 hours per week handling the filing of old case files. Each case is filed per a retention schedule that determines how long each is kept. This is determined by the nature of the charges in the case. All cases past their minimum retention period are destroyed. All files I handle are technically public record, though discussing individual cases is not allowed.

Sharing My Work with Others
WORKING IN THE COURTHOUSE
The Iron County Justice Court handles traffic tickets, minor offenses through Misdemeanor B, and small claims cases in Cedar City and surrounding areas. As an intern, I will be handling the retention schedule, which entails destroying old cases and refiling newer cases, or those that require longer filing.
ABOUT ME
I am a Political Science student at Southern Utah University. My goal is to become an appointed justice at the district level or higher. I will be graduating with my Bachelors of Political Science next Fall, with a minor in legal studies.
